In loving memory of Karl Thwaites, 11.04.1975 – 26.09.2025

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Karl.

Karl was one of the kindest, most generous and most dependable people we’ve ever had the privilege to know. For more than six years, he was an active and dedicated member of The Pirate Castle’s volunteer team — a skilled canoe coach and qualified volunteer skipper who gave countless hours to helping others enjoy and learn on the water.

Whether teaching paddling skills, leading sessions, supporting our Upperdeckers group or contributing to other community projects along the canal, Karl’s gentle nature, patience and sense of humour touched everyone he met. He was always ready with a smile, a helping hand or a word of encouragement — especially for those who needed it most.

Karl’s connection with the water ran deep. He also gave a lot of his time to the Sea Cadets, continuing to share his passion and knowledge with young people on a weekly basis.

Life wasn’t always easy for Karl, but he faced every challenge with strength, grace and unfailing kindness. What could have made others bitter only made him more compassionate. He was rich in friendship, empathy and warmth — qualities that made him a treasured part of our Pirate Castle family.

We are deeply grateful for everything Karl contributed to our community over the years. His legacy will live on in every splash of a paddle, every new paddler he inspired, every canal boat trip and in the hearts of all of us who had the privilege to know him.

Our hearts go out to his children, Allyssa and Kurt, his partner Claire and all of his family and friends.

Karl will be dearly missed and fondly remembered — always.

With love and gratitude,

Everyone at The Pirate Castle
